Questions raised on LLRC implementation, CJ impeachment
While the 15th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council Periodic Review continues in Geneva, the Canadian Foreign Ministry had summoned Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Ottawa, Chitranganee Wagiswara last week.
Wagiswara told The Island that in the absence of the Foreign Minister John Baird and the Director General, she had had to meet the Acting DG Graham McIntyre. Subsequently, there was a discussion with the Assistant Deputy Foreign Minister, Peter McGovern.
They raised questions with regard to the implementation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) recommendations and the recent impeachment of Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, she said.
"I explained to them that a Task Force had been established to implement the LLRC’s suggestions and the process was continuing at a steady pace," the High Commissioner said, adding that she had also outlined the ongoing resettlement of persons who had been displaced as
a result of a near three-decade war, with the LTTE.She said that the progress with regard to the rehabilitation and release of ex-LTTE cadres and demining of large areas in the North of Sri Lanka has also been conveyed to the Canadian government.

"With regard to the impeachment of Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, I impressed upon them that it had been done in terms of Article 107(3) of the Constitution and existing Parliamentary Standing Orders", Wagiswara observed.
The High Commissioner called upon Canada to attend the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held in Colombo, while pointing out that all arrangements were in place to host all member countries.
