The estate owners point out although they contribute a large percent to the tea manufacturing sector in the country, they have not received standard fertiliser for their crops.Small tea estate owners make-up 72 percent of the tea manufacturing sector in the country.These estate owners cultivate on 220, 000 hectares of estate land.However, the small tea estate owners point out that it is difficult to maintain their plantations as they do not receive fertiliser suitable for their crops.When Newsfirst contacted the Chairman of Tea
Small Holdings Development Authority Noel Padmasiri, he said that regular inspections are carried out on the quality of fertiliser.He added that steps have been taken to identify farmers whose crops have been abandoned and provide them with tea saplings.
