United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday called on his party rank and file to unreservedly support him and he would in turn fulfill their aspirations.
"I will look after all of you, but you need to stand by me and provide the support needed to install the UNP in power," he told a Working Committee meeting of the party trade union, Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya at Pita Kotte.
Pledging to revive the economy and re-establish the rule of law, he said that unity was the key to capturing power at
the next national election.
Wickremesinghe said that Monday’s launch of the eleven-member UNP led alliance at the New Town Hall, was an indication that the Opposition was gradually binding into a formidable unit. The UNP’s new ‘Radical Programme’ had drawn various political parties and it was the ideal platform for a countrywide agitation against the rising crime wave, rampant corruption at the highest levels, disregard for judicial rulings, political interference in the police and judiciary and continued harassment of the media, he said.
Wickremesinghe said that the joint opposition has to get onto the streets if its campaign to oust the dictatorial Rajapaksa regime was to achieve the desired result.
