“13 Police powers would not be given,do not talk about it”
-Gotabhaya tells to Menon
Under the 13th amendment of the constitution giving the Police powers is a matter that would go beyond the desire of the country’s security. In this regard it is useless talking about the police powers to be given in the 13th amendment the Sri Lanka government had informed
India.
This was stated in the Island newspaper after the advisor to defense activities of India Shiva Shankar Menon was here for talks with our government officials.
The Defense Secretary Gotabbhaya Rajapaksa had stressed that by giving police powers under the 13th amendment to the Tamil speaking people in the North, there would arise conflicts. The Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had reiterated this fact a number of times.
In response to the decision of the Defense Secretary, the Defence Adviser Menon suggested to have an alternate solution. When Menon met the HE President he too replied to his request also in the same manner.
