A chanceless unbeaten 134 from Kumar Sangakkara inspired Sri Lanka to a seven-wicket win over an overly cautious England on Thursday to leave Champions Trophy Group A wide open ahead of the final two matches.
A victory in the day/night clash would have taken England through to the semi-finals as one of the top two while defeat would have dumped Sri Lanka out but all is still left to play for with New Zealand leading the group on three points.
England, who next face New Zealand in Cardiff on Sunday, and Sri Lanka are on two points with Australia on one ahead of their meeting with Angelo Mathews’ side at the Oval on Monday.
“I was pretty happy with the way I went about it,” Sangakkara said at the post-match presentation.
“It was tough on the bowlers but both sides batted well.

The SLPL Tournament similar to the Indian Cricket Premier League Tournament which commenced last year in Sri Lanka was scheduled to be held in August this year. However, it was reported that this is in suspense now.
There are a number of reasons that has contributed to this situation. One of the reasons is that a good number of competent players are to participate in the Carribean League Tournament scheduled to be held in South Africa next July. Though that tour will be held in August too, the organisers have issued regulations that players who expect to attend the SLPL Tour should not go to Africa, and it is not clear whether this is practical.
On the other hand, one other reason reported is that as large number of expenditure, inclusive of hotel bills relative to the SLPL Tournament last year had not been settled, it has become a diifficult task to reserve hotels this year. This

Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying it was the “right time” to stop playing the Twenty20 tournament.
“This is my last IPL. This has been a fantastic season,” Tendulkar said in a television interview after his team’s victory in the final on Sunday.
Tendulkar is the world’s leading scorer in both Test and one-day cricket with an unprecedented 100 international centuries.
He has figured in all six editions of the T20 competition.
“I think this is the right time to stop playing the IPL. I am 40. Got to accept it. This is the best point to say thank you very much to all the supporters and well-wishers,” he said.
The IPL has been dogged by corruption allegations with three cricketers and some 11 bookmakers among those arrested over spot-fixing, causing outrage in the cricket-mad nation.

Seasoned campaigner Brad Hodge (54 off 29 balls) snatched a brilliant win for Rajasthan Royals to take the team to the Qualifier 2 when they rallied to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets in the Eliminator at Ferozshah Kotla Stadium on Wednesday. The winners meet Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 for a place in the final against Chennai Super Kings.
The Royals chased a small target of 133 in 19.2 overs with Hodge, fittingly, clubbing two successive sixes off Darren Sammy in the last over. CSK along with Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals qualified for the Champions League.
